This experience is great for anyone who has already had some exposure to forest therapy, also known as shinrin-yoku (or its direct translation “forest bathing”), which will include:
- review basic concepts of forest therapy practice
- at least 2 guided exercises (in forest therapy termed “invitations” to highlight that there is no particular way they must be carried out and that you may interpret and do them in your own way) which engage the physical senses
- at least 2 guided exercises which go beyond the 5 physical senses and draw upon the intuitive senses of proprioception, enteroception, mirror sensing and body radar
- concluding tea ceremony
More Detail: about forest therapy and why it can be beneficial
Preparation
Wear whatever is comfortable, suited to the weather, and permits free movement. The terrain is level, and we won’t be covering any big distance, so footwear need not be for “hiking”. Since forest bathing moves at a slower pace, be mindful to keeping warm when is cool; dressing in layers is helpful to avoid being distracted by feeling too warm or cool.
You may wish to bring a journal and pen for recording some reflections. If you are not comfortable sitting directly on the ground and/or against a tree, bring a small, portable seat/stool/mat of some sort.
